The Samsung Galaxy Note 3 might go back to using a Mali GPU (specifically the ARM Mali-450), after the Samsung Galaxy S4 took a short detour for an Imagination PowerVR SGX543 GPU. So what’s the deal here? When the Samsung Galaxy S4 was rumored to use a PowerVR SGX543 GPU, just like the iPhone 5,…

Calling our devices smart phones is really a misnomer; they are really handheld computers that process massive amounts of data. This is why they are so wonderful, of course, but also means that they require a fair amount of power, too.

No one wants to have to charge their phone in the middle of the day, or panic during a power outage. So, how do you choose the best Android phone? Well, start with learning about battery life.

The average life of an Android phone is about ten hours, although some phones have a much better battery life and some have significantly less. Certain activities such as surfing the Internet or playing games can drain battery life. However, here are some of the best Android phones in terms of battery life regardless of whether you use your phone for talking, texting, Android gaming, or as a web browser:

Motorola Droid Razr Maxx

By far the industry leader, the Razr clocks in at an impressive sixteen hours (or even as much as 19, according to some sources). With its huge 4.3 inch screen and 8mp camera, 4G connection and 1.2 GHz speed, as well as its light construction and super thin body, it’s hard to go wrong with this phone.

Samsung Rugby Pro

With a battery life of nearly sixteen hours, the Rugby Pro offers a sturdier construction that makes it safer for those that are hard on phones. It’s also 4G with a fast processor although the camera offers a more modest 5mp. It does, however, offer a more rigid frame and is waterproof for up to a half hour under a meter of water.

Samsung Galaxy S III

This phone falls much closer to the average battery life of Android phones, clocking it at slightly under twelve hours (although some sources rate it much higher). However, it does offer the most bang for your buck with its big screen, light weight and incredible processing speed. It also has an 8mp camera and a high resolution screen and is considered the best rival of the iPhone.

HTC Droid DNA

By far the biggest phone with a great battery life, the HTC DNA offers a whopping five inch screen but a light weight and a 1.5 GHz processor – one of the best available. With both a rear and front facing camera (rear is 8mp and front is 2.9mp), you can get great shots with this phone. While some consider the large size a bit awkward in pockets, the large size makes it excellent for entertainment. With a battery life of about eight hours (some sources go as high as eleven, but most say seven to nine), you’ll need to keep your charge cord handy.

So what phones should you avoid? The worst battery life offenders are definitely the pay-as-you-go phones available at stores that specialize in prepaid services; some phones barely make it to the three hour mark. If you are worried about battery life, it’s clearly a smarter bet to go through the big service providers to get the best deal on a great phone.

hyou 1 300x250If you##Q##re a bit clumsy, and given to face planting your Samsung phone, then you##Q##ll welcome the news that the upcoming Samsung Galaxy S4  is expected to have a flexible and unbreakable screen.

The bendy screen has been codenamed Project J and could be on sale as early as next April.

Samsung is in a selling war with Apple##Q##s rival iPhones for the biggest share of the $200 billion market, so a revolutionary new screen could see a significant sales boost.

The technology could include LEDs on a plastic surface instead of a glass one, making the smartphone lighter and possibly cheaper to manufacture.

Samsung Galaxy S4 features

The Samsung Galaxy S4 is also expected to have a 13-megapixel camera, with a 441ppi 1080p screen, one up from the Samsung Galaxy S3##Q##s 306ppi 720p display and the iPhone##Q##s 326ppi.

It will also feature a larger and better display as well as a more powerful processor.

In an early Christmas present, Samsung is predicted to ship 22.5million of the Galaxy S3 and Note II smartphones in the quarter to the end of the year, and the total Galaxy S3 sales will top 40 million by the end of this month.

The ongoing legal spat with Apple has made potential customers realise that Samsung phones have plenty to offer and the firm is trousering plenty of cash on the back of it.

The Galaxy Note 2 is doing very well for it##Q##s self sales wise as well reaching 5 million sales in just over a month.

You##Q##d better watch out in case the youngest family members are asking Santa to stuff the Best Kids Android apps down the chimney this Christmas.

The android apps market is growing and nowhere is this more obvious than in the number of developers working on apps for kids.

Just as the desktop computer started out as a word processor for mums and dads, and then became a family entertainment centre, so smartphones have widened their appeal across the whole age spectrum.

No sooner is there a popular TV series than you can get a matching Best Kids Android apps, and whether you##Q##re into story books, art or games you can find something the kids will like

While some of the apps have started out as iPad or iPhone, an increasing number of them are now reworked for android smartphones.

The Best Kids Android apps

Among them are Colour & Draw for Kids, a 69p colouring and drawing book. Some of the pictures are preloaded and you can buy others in app.

Then there##Q##s Magic Piano, a free virtual piano which morphs into magical shapes. Kids can learn a selection of songs to play, including classics and pop songs. If education##Q##s your thing then the 69p app Times Tables: Squeebles Multiplication for primary school age youngsters is good fun as well as a learning game.  It##Q##s a multi-use app, and up to four children can use it and record their progress in answering questions and rescuing characters from a monster.

There##Q##s even an official Department of Health app called Change4Life Fun Generator. It##Q##s free and gives ideas for more than 100 child friendly activities, indoors and outdoors it##Q##s one of our favorite Best Kids Android apps.

You##Q##ll only want Junior accessing the Best Kids Android apps so Famigo Sandbox, a free app, is a good idea. It makes sure only apps suitable for young eyes are shown, and locks off other features.

Originally designed for children with autism, the Cause and Effect Sensory Lightbox at £1.49 has animation and sound and will appeal to children of all age groups while A Day at the Circus at £1.99 has lots of Big Top fun with 20 games themed around clowns, lions and other animals. That one is suitable for tots from the age of three.

For a little bit more money, £2.49, you can get Moo, Baa, La, La, La! which has interactive noises and works like a digital pop-up book.

Just a word of warning. Probably best to keep an eye on Junior to make sure he doesn##Q##t start exploring your phone. Once he starts dialing up his kindergarten m8s to arrange play dates, it could be an expensive lesson to learn.

And don##Q##t forget to disconnect the child-friendly apps before that important meeting with the MD.

You might only find out how successful the gift has been when you get back to work after the Christmas break and find Junior has wiped six months of sales figures rather than playing the Best Kids Android apps
