Samsung have set the date for the First Developer Conference with tickets expected to sell like hot cakes.

Such is the interest in the October 27-29 event in San Francisco that devs are already clamouring for more details.

The focus will be on all Samsung’s products and resources including Tizen, Windows, apps, APIs / SDKs and Smart TVs as well as Android and Touch Wiz.

Details are pretty sparse at the moment but if you want to sign up to be first in the queue for tickets visit.

Industry watchers are speculating on whether the conference will feature the streaming set top Boxee which Samsung acquired recently.

The firm has launched a Smart App Challenge 2014 aimed at Galaxy S4 mobile app developers with the aim of finding new apps to use group communication functionality.

Samsung is clearly interested in what outsiders have to offer as earlier this year it announced a Silicon Valley innovation centre and $1.1 billion of funds to find the next big thing in the tech world.

Apple, Google and Microsoft already hold dev conferences and a Samsung event will target those who specifically want to target the Samsung brand of handsets.

If you’re fed up with phones approaching the size of roof tiles, and just as uncomfortable to hold, then take a look at the Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini.

Just coming on to the market and retailing around £350 on pay-as-you-go, the Mini is small enough to pop into your pocket or to use one handed. It comes in just two colours, black or white. It’s a teeny 61.3mm wide, 124.6mm height and 8.94mm deep and weighs just 107g.

Under the bonnet there’s a 4.3in qHD sAMOLED display at 540×960 qHD resolution and a powerful Dual Core 1.7GHz processor. There’s 1.5GB RAM and either 8GB or 16GB ROM. The camera at the rear is an 8megapixel shooter plus a 1.9megapixel HD on the front. The phone runs on Android Jelly Bean 4.2.2.

The Mini Galaxy S4

The 1900mAH battery will give you nine hours of 3G internet or 11 hours on wifi. On standby you can get 300 hours. It has an accelerometer, geomagnetic, gyro, light and proximity sensor.

Hot on the heels of the Samsung Galaxy S4, the Mini has a lot of the same features, including Group Play where you can link your phone to those of your friends to use the handsets as a speaker system. You can also create a photo collage or play a game together.

One of the things that we love here at Androidizen is the S Health app on the full sized Galaxy S4 and we’re pleased to see it’s been ported over to the Mini. All you do is download the application from Samsung Apps and you can keep tabs on how many steps you’ve done in a day, how much you’ve consumed in calories. If you download the S Band which is sold separately then it’s like having your own personal trainer.

If you travel a lot, or even go outside your own locality, then the S Travel app is a fantastic way to get tourist guides, find out the best places to eat, things to see and how to get there. It really is a fantastic map in your pocket with so many added extras.

The Samsung Link means you can share all your content with friends or family and you can also upload pictures or video to a Samsung TV set. HomeSync, which is sold separately, means that all your media can be stored and shared and you don’t need to worry about losing it or about capacity or security loss because it’s stored remotely.

You can download a user manual from the internet or there’s a nifty tutorial on www.samsung.com which will get you started with some easy to follow tips.

If you shop around you should be able to get the handset much more cheaply on a two-year contract. Three have been offering it for £26 a month on a two-year deal.

Watch out for reviews of the Samsung Galaxy S4 Active and the Samsung Galaxy S4 zoom which promise some additional features, in particular for the camera on the S4 zoom.

If you’ve heard about the new security scare for Android phones then don’t panic – but you do need to take care over downloading apps.

This is something that was discovered by the Bluebox Security team and it affects most handsets since Android 1.6, the Donut version, which haven’t been patched. Bluebox think that up to 900 million devices could be susceptible, which is about 99% on the market!

However, if you’ve rooted and ROM’d your smartphone then you’re OK, although there are other security concerns with doing that to your device.

The way that rogue devs work is that Android apps all have an encrypted key and updates need the same digital key to overwrite.

Android Bluebox Security Scare

What Bluebox have found is that these digital demon hackers have been able to jemmy their way into an Android app and Trojan the code for their own purposes without altering the encrypted key.

The danger is that when you next update the app you might download the rogue version without realising it, giving a malevolent third party access to your Android system. You won’t know it either, because these hackers are clever enough to hide their tracks, as far as the user is concerned, the app is behaving just as you would expect it to.

While the app is sitting on your phone it could access your credit card info, data, passwords, system info, make phone calls, send SMS messages, anything it wants to snoop on. It could also become part of a zombie system to create a botnet.

This problem has been known about for the last four months and Samsung has already sorted out a fix with the Galaxy S4 but at the moment not their other devices. HTC hasn’t yet got a fix for any of its phones.

However, yes, it is a bit of a worry that rogue devs may be able to open an Android app and then change the code but the Google Play Store has been patched to prevent any rogue downloads. So as long as you don’t downloads apps from anywhere else you’ve got no worries.

If you also get apps from other places then you might want to hold back for the moment until a fix is released. According to Bluebox Security it’s not a difficult thing to do because the fix is two lines of code in a specific location. The challenge is issuing a firmware update.

In the meantime you need to go into Settings, Security and uncheck the box that says Unknown Sources – Allow installation of apps from sources other than the Play Store. You can also make sure the box to Verify Apps – Block or warn before installing apps that may cause harm – is checked.

If you root your phone you can install a ROM with a fix but it’s a timely warning really to avoid installing hacked apps, no matter how tempting it might be. Keep your virus protection up to date as well.

If you want to follow this saga more closely then Bluebox Security will be disclosing more about it at the Black Hat Briefings in Las Vegas on August 1.

Here is the latest Real Racing 3 update known as Precision adding in a new Time Trial mode. Two new manufacturers cars as well as updated graphics makes this one of the biggest free updates to a mobile game ever! Update your game now for the new features.

It’s really great to see EA upgrading the game so far after launch and adding in so many new cars is a real bonus as well. The price is still free with IAP but honestly the game is a blast even if you never pay a penny in app.

Taken from the developers from a while back it looks like the AI has also been given an overhaul:

- Major TSM AI enhancements are coming! The AI will be less clumsy and more realistic. It’s a delicate balance of course, but the improvements should make things much more enjoyable to those players that weren’t all that happy with the initial implementation.

Consumer watchdogs claim that the Samsung Galaxy S4 outshines Apple’s iPhone 5 which it says is the slowest smartphone on the market.

In comparison, the Galaxy S4, running on Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean, outshines its main rival in the $253 billion smartphone market with a performance that is almost twice as fast.

Which? says that the Samsung S4 scored 3,188 on the Geekbench speed test, an industry standard, while the iPhone trailed along on 1,664, behind six other handsets.

The tests measure processing and memory speed and Which put seven handsets through their paces including those from Google, Sony, HTC and BlackBerry. They looked at their performance for playing games, multi-tasking, using apps and editing pictures.

Some of the results are likely to be down to the speed of the processor. The Samsung Galaxy S4 has a 1.9GHz quad-core processor while the Apple has a 1.2GHz dual-core.

The Android HTC One was second in the ratings on 2798 followed by the Sony Xperia Z third on 2173 and the Google Nexus 4 fourth with 2134.

In fifth place was the Samsung Galaxy Note 2 on 1950 and the BlackBerry Z10 on 1698 was sixth.

Samsung has loaded its new S4 with masses of features including the ability to call a friend, answer the phone, preview emails and control videos without even touching the phone. It can also be used as a controller for your home entertainment system.

Androidizen put both the Samsung Galaxy S4 and the HTC One through a comparison, see how they did.

It has some innovative features including S Health which lets you monitor your fitness levels during workouts and tracks your diet. You can also ask it to keep an eye on your comfort level with temperature and humidity info.

If you buy a compatible body scale it checks your weight and uploads it to the S4 via Bluetooth. The S Band, a simple clip on wrist band, can measure your sleep efficiency with a 3D sensor and report back to your phone.

One of its new features is S Translator which will be a boon to anyone who has to travel abroad for business or on holiday and wants a quick way of making themselves understood.

Which? testers found the S4 good to use for editing pictures. It has a rear 13 megapixel shooter on the back and a 2 megapixel camera on the front with full HD recording at 30 frames per second. There are lots of features including dual shot, drama shot, sound and shot, 360 degree photo, animated photo, eraser, night, best photo, best face, beauty face, high dynamic range, panorama and sports mode.

Meanwhile, the iPhone has an 8 megapixel iSight camera with video recording HD at 1080p up to 30 frames a second with audio. The Face Time HD camera has 1.2 megapixel photos and 720p HD video up to 30 frames a second. It has improved video stabilisation and photo and video geotagging.

In other news the little Android games console we all hope can OUYA has been released to retail so those that skipped it during it’s Kickstarter can now pick one up for $99 or £99 we have them now in our Store.

Stefan Svartling is reporting that HTC have launched the Butterfly S, wait you thought the HTC One was their flagship? Well sorry no. The Butterfly S is packing a near identical spec to the Samsung Galaxy S4.

  • 5-inch Super LCD 3  1920 x 1080 HD resolution,
  • Snapdragon 600 processor at 1.9GHz
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16GB of internal storage.
  • MicroSD card slot
  • UltraPixel Camera
  • 3200 mha Battery

Where things differ for the Butterfly S is in the use of LCD rather than SuperAMOled displays as found on Samsung’s Phones and that HTC has included the Ultrapixel camera from the One as well.

So really it’s the best of both devices, It’s an S4 spec device with a great camera of the One and by the looks of it front facing speakers.

The HTC Butterfly S could be one of the more interesting devices this year it really is like they put together an S4 of their very own. The S must stand for Samsung icon smile

Now that Android phones have taken over the iPhone in market share, the future of Android is a big question. It is on Google to keep things fresh as a new iPhone lurks around the corner. D11 has given us a glimpse of what the future might hold.

More Cohesion Among Devices

Something that is both a strength and a weakness for Android is the lack of a uniform experience across the mass of devices out there. This is largely in part because of manufacturer’s tendencies to modify Android to their liking. In an interview at D11, Android chief Sundar Pichai said himself that the Android network is bigger than he expected.

He says that in the future the intention will be to create more common ground among devices, while still giving manufacturers room to innovate. As for a practical step forward on this front, Pichai said that the HTC One and the Google S4 will be available on Google Play with the Nexus interface.

Motorola’s New Phone

Motorola’s Dennis Woodside confirmed the existence of the Moto X. Its name suggests that it is the long rumored Google X phone. While he stated the phone was in his pocket, he did not reveal it to the audience. The information is still vague, but Woodside said that the phone will have sensors that enable it to be ‘contextually aware’.

It seems reasonable to think that this feature will integrate with Google Now. In addition to this feature, Woodside said 70% of the product will be assembled in a Fort Worth, Texas plant. He described it as the first smartphone to be built in the U.S. Beyond these concrete aspects of the phone, ideas were tossed around for the future. Electric tattoos and a pill you can swallow were suggested as potential forms of verification.

Unlike YouTube, Motorola’s identity still seems to retain an air of independence after their acquisition by Google. It has to be remembered that if Motorola’s new phone is a success, it is a success for Google. It could be a game changer capable of taking on the Galaxy S4 and the iPhone 5S, but we will have to wait to find that out.

Samsung: Will They Stay On Top?

Overall, we didn’t see any big reveals or huge hints at Android’s future. The coming year seems to be more about refinement than anything else. We may see the market shares evening out between manufacturers. Google’s Nexus phones along with the Moto X may help them to expand their reputation as hardware developers.

On the other hand, with Samsung’s new Design 3.0 paradigm on the way, a more uniform design may establish them as an even bigger presence in the Android market. While Pichai denies any sense of competition with Samsung, suggesting greater collaboration between the companies in the coming year, it is hard to deny that Google wouldn’t mind seeing more of their phones moving off the shelves.

There’s nothing worse than being surrounded by cables or hunting round for a mislaid charger, but MobileFun have the solution.

They’ve just shown-off a wireless charging unit for the recently launched Samsung Galaxy S4 and the Google Nexus 4.

The Qi Wireless Charging Stand is the answer to all our prayers and what’s not to like as the price is comparable to wired chargers, instead of being more expensive.

It’s a two-in-one device which not only charges your smartphone but also flips open to use as a desk stand. It doesn’t matter which way round you want to use it, portrait for work or landscape for gaming, it works either way.

Nexus 4 users just get the gear out of the box and away you go because the Nexus 4 has integrated wireless charging.

qi samsung galaxy s4 wireless charging cover black

It’s a bit more complicated for the Galaxy S4, but not much. You’ll need to get a Qi Samsung S4 Wireless Charging Cover, to replace the original battery cover. Once you have that you can watch the MobileFun video for step-by-step instructions on how to set it up.

Unlike most power units, the one for the S4 comes in white as well as black and you can pre-order through the Mobile Fun website. The charger costs £34.99 and the new battery cover is £24.99.

We’ve spent quite a lot of time with the Galaxy S4, this isn’t a first blush review by any stretch of the imagination. Quite a lot of time and effort has gone into using the S4 in lots of different situations and really taking a good look at what Samsung are bringing us.

So first off spec wise, this is by far the most powerful smartphone ever created. The Qualcomm Snapdragon 600 processor is backed up with great GPU, a 1080p 5in display, 2 gig of system ram… it flies. Let’s face it, this is the fastest smartphone ever created.

But it’s let down in a few areas which we’ll come on to later in the review. Now, first off, the style of the Samsung Galaxy S4 is striking, but maybe not the most progressive of designs we’ve ever seen.

Certainly when placed against something like an HTC ONE this does look a little bit out of date, let’s say, a little bit too close to the Galaxy S3 and the Note 2 with only really minor updates to the general look and feel of the hardware.

However, one massive change that Samsung have made is the in-the-hand feel. Now, the Galaxy S4 feels great in the hand.

With the Note 2 and the S3 at times you could feel your finger starting to strain a little bit because of the kind of curved back wasn’t quite as curved as it could be.

Now, though, the feel certainly in my hands is very very good. The weighting as well has been distributed much better so at no point do you quite feel the device is tipping.

Galaxy S4 Build Quality

The continued use of polycarbonates in the Galaxy S4 does make you feel that the device is little bit cheap.

The S4 does feel shiny and plasticky and a little bit nasty which is a shame because the weight is brilliant, the hand feel is perfect, it’s comfortable to use but it just feels a little bit plasticky and cheap which is such a shame.

We can argue all day long which is better – aluminium or polycarbonate but again this is one of those personal choice moments.

If you’re someone who wants aluminium, you feel that gives you more durability then the S4 is not going to be for you. If you’re someone who’s willing to trade off the polycarbonate for the replaceable battery and more spec for your money then the S4 may very well be a good choice.

And these are really the choices we have to make, It’s aluminium and less spec for our money, no removable battery or polycarbonate plastics, removable battery and a higher clock and higher spec overall. So, we have our trade off. My personal feeling is I like removable batteries and that probably answers the question.

Software on the Galaxy S4

So, on the software side of things. Samsung have thrown everything and the kitchen sink into the Galaxy S4.

You’ve got everything from an optical character recognition system which can also do translations so you can point it at an object which has text on it and it will translate that text in real time for you either into English or into other languages.

S Voice which I still wish Samsung would dump! It’s not a patch on Google Now, S Translator, S Planner and S Memo round out the software offerings from Samsung.

S Translator being one of the new items which allows for near real-time translation between two languages so if you’re travelling into a foreign country or something or you meet somebody from a foreign country and you’re having trouble having that conversation you can use S Translator to assist you. For the most part it works well. It does require you to speak fairly slowly and quite deliberately but it gets there in the end.

S Health though, is by far the shining example on the S4 and it makes you wonder why all of Samsung’s apps can’t be of this quality. With the S Health app it tracks your day-to-day life. It monitors how many calories you’ve burned how much weight you’ve gained and helps you stay fit and healthy. And as you can see the app is beautifully designed.

In comparison to some of the other Samsung apps it’s like they’ve got somebody else to build this for them.

The S Health app it’s phenomenal, maybe not the reason to buy the S4 in its own right but if you’re a fitness fanatic or if you’re someone who’s looking to get fit, the S Health app might be a tipping point compared to other handsets on the market.

S Memo and S Planner are unchanged from the previous editions, they’ve been given a few tweaks here and there but the basic functionality is still the same.

If you use them on the S3 or on the Note 2 effectively these are Samsung’s versions of a note taking app and a calendar app. I’m afraid to say Google does it better.

Samsung Link is the new name for the Allcast and Share application I believe. This allows you to link up multiple different devices including PCs and other phones and share information wirelessly between them. They work quite well in practice.

We were able to pull graphics and video footage from a local PC over wifi and display them on the S4 with very little time delay and it all felt very fluid and easy to use. However it was quite a chore setting up the Samsung software on the PC. It took several attempts, a few reboots and a bit of magic.

It was strange, we couldn’t work out exactly why it wasn’t working it just seemed to be a bit glitchy.

Watch On is a very interesting and useful app it will allow you to pick what types of shows you enjoy watching. It will then make suggestions to you about what shows you might like to watch and if you want to watch the show you simply tap the show’s name and the infrared port on the Galaxy S4 will automatically change the channel for you.

Likewise, you can set up all of your audio video equipment in the WatchOn app and by doing so you can then control your television your audio video equipment Blu-ray player, all from your smartphone.

For me, that is a bit of a killer feature and it kinds of puts the S4 heads and shoulders above any of the other smartphones out there. It’s a very nice implementation, I would have preferred an application built solely by Samsung because this one is a bit ugly in places.

Samsung have also seen fit to put their own app store on there which is not as good as the Play Store but it has a reasonable attempt.

The standard Google apps are all included as well, so you’ll find Gmail, Google Chrome, Google Maps, Play music ,Play movies, Play books all of the usual things you would expect on any Android device is here.

Samsung have also seen fit to include their video app and a few other little bits and pieces. What Samsung have done really is improve the sensors in the Galaxy S4.

There’s a lot more sensors, including things like barometers, temperature gauges, tilt control, gyroscopes it’s all available on the S4 and also things like Smart Scroll, Smart Stay Air Gestures and Air View.

One cool feature of Air Gestures is to be able to pick up an icon and then instead of having to try and move the icon to the edges of the screen you can simply wave your hand over one of the sensors and then drop the icon where you’d like.

Multi window allows you to have two applications on screen at the same time which is cool we like that idea but it would be nice if it could be two different applications at the same time just picked from your app tray.

So overall we really like the Samsung Galaxy S4.

While we’ve had quite a lot of teething troubles with it, the overheating issue, the headphone jack issue and the general manufacturing, and as we’ve got used to the S4 and we’ve found a few workarounds to some of the problems, we found it to be a very competent device, one of the better smartphones on the market.

We will be taking a look at the HTC ONE and we’ll also be comparing it to the S3 and the Note 2 but overall I think if you’re in the market for a new phone now, the S4 is the one to go for.

If you already have an S3 or a Note 2 I would say there’s not quite enough here to justify it. Not unless you need the bigger 1080p screen or the faster processor.

If you don’t need either of those two things really what Samsung have offered here is not enough to justify selling your S3 or Note 2 or trading in and buying an S4.

It’s a great device it’s got a lot of rough edges. And the extra stuff that we’re getting here is mostly software.
There is not really enough to justify dumping a device like the S3 or Note 2 that’s barely a year old.

Those are great devices, so is the S4 and for me, this device sits in between the S3 and the Note 2 and it’s kind of like the S3 now becomes the mid range model the Galaxy S4 becomes the high end smartphone and the Note 2 is still the king. I would also suggest checking out some Galaxy S4 cases as well to help protect your investment.

Finding the perfect video games for your kids may not be a cakewalk as it seems but rather turnout to be a daunting task. Kids mostly associate themselves with video games at a much deeper level than we adults would do. Normally the best of games which are popular amongst adults may not seem to go down well with your kids. Again advanced gaming consoles may not help much as kids are not trained well enough to run them and maybe some parents maybe frequenting the playstation customer service centers time and again to get them repaired from damage due to rough handling.

Your child would rather be well to do with simple computer games that are not too hard as this may result in the child getting frustrated and tensed. Simultaneously you have to also ensure that the game is not too easy as this may cause the child to become bored and lose interest. A good video game for your kids is one that would keep them engrossed and thinking all the time while challenging their capabilities to do better. A good video game can help your kids grow to be more mature and reasonable and hence stop running here and there for advanced technologies rather sit down and reason out as to which would be the best computerized game for your kids.

Below is a brief about 7 games that we think could help your kids think on their feet and keep their young minds interested. These games can run on simple computers and do not require costly equipment or complex gaming systems.

The 7 Perfect Computerized Games for Kids :

1) World of Zoo :
A great zoo game for small kids which enables to think creatively and fill up their virtual zoos with different kinds of animals. Kids can also have the option changing colors, skins, shapes and sizes of animals. It helps the kids understand more about the animal kingdom and create their own species as well.

2) Nancy Drew PC Series :
This amazing series of girl detective games helps your kids think in different ways as they work the way of out solving riddles and puzzles that lead up to cracking the case. Kids can have a feel good feeling about being a detective and solving crimes and therefore have a positive mindset in the bargain.

3) ItsaBitza :
When it comes to building confidence in young kids very few other games can beat this one. ItsaBitza puts to effective test reading and understanding skills of the child. Written instructions are displayed asking the child to follow and draw a object as per their understanding. Once the child has done that the drawing comes alive with animation and is put to use in whatever possible way with special characters.

4) Babysitting Mania :
This game teaches children to take responsibility of other smaller kids. The kids are kept busy most of the time looking after small babies and cleaning them up. A great game if you have older kids at home and want to teach them to take care of their siblings.

5) Cake Mania :
Older kids can try their hand at making cakes and delivering orders on time. As the game advances the time decreases while the amount of orders increases. A great game to teach your kids a lesson on time management and some tips about customer service.

6) Lego Star Wars :
A popular action game for kids. This game is one of the pioneer game sin the industry and your kids would be more than happy to experience all Star Wars films with their favorite Lego characters along with heroes and villains.

7) Lucidity :
An extremely well designed fairy tale game that has great animations to give your kids a wonderful live picture book experience. The players have to assist the character in her travel by protecting her from wild animals and fatal traps.

So now therefore stop calling the playstation customer service help lines to find out which game would suit your kids the best. Just get a copy of these games loaded onto your computer and you have the 7 perfect computerized games for your kids.

Well looks like Google has wasted no time in bringing their Android app for Google+ up-to speed with the desktop version releasing V4.

Rolling out now to Android devices the new update brings a host of new features including the fruits of the Snapseed purchase. Instagram style filters are no available from a redesigned images panel that gives much more control over your photos on Google Plus.

  • Auto Backup, to safely and privately store your photos as you snap them
  • Auto Highlight, to browse a selection of top shots from every set of photos you add
  • Auto Enhance, to make subtle improvements to the people and places in your images, automatically
  • Auto Awesome, to create fun new versions of your pictures (like animations and panoramas) based on the photos in your library

Also included are the Hashtags that appear beside each update allowing for a deeper look at the meaning behind the tag, another layer on the conversation as it were.

These Google-added tags will appear at the top-right of individual posts (#GoogleIO2013, in this example), and tapping on them will reveal streams of relevant content

Google has also made improvements to location sharing making it easier to share your location only with select circles or individuals.

Tapping “Locations” will display your friends’ current locations on a map, making it easier to make plans and meet up.

All in all another fine update from the Google+ team that is sure to add to Plus Experience.

Wow just when you thought OUYA was a home run comes word that Overdose Caffeine wont be releasing their massively popular and very good game Pocket Fleet. OUYA is Android games console you plug into the TV thing is developer are required to modify their games to work with the console and for some it’s more work than is viable with a small team.

While it might seem we would only need to map the controls in Pocket Fleet to the OUYA controller (a job of only a few days), it turned out to be much more than that. The biggest surprise was what they required in terms of new menu design. We assumed the user could move a cursor around to select things on our main menu, but this was not the case. The company required that we redesign the main screen so that people could move around it by highlighting different buttons. This may sound simple but certain circumstances meant that it was anything but. - Tolga Ozuygur

It’s a fair point if OUYA wants to be successful it has to smooth the path to getting games onto it’s console, content is king and if one of the best games around wont be on your console it might be time to look again at the ODK.

Battery Drain on the Galaxy S4 seems to be an issue for some, here is how I fixed it on my Galaxy S4.

The symptom is your S4 draining battery whilst using the Google Maps Service that handles location updates for other android apps.

To fix the issue on my Galaxy S4 I did a factory reset which wipes all the data from your handset and restores the default software as it came from the factory.

This resolved the battery drain issue I was having with Google Maps service.

Back in the day, many devices just did one thing. Phones were used for just making phone calls and nothing else.  When this was the case, getting a separate GPS device for actually navigating on the road made a lot more sense.

But the recent advent of 4G smartphones with Google Maps loaded on them for free had a lot of people wondering whether buying a separate GPS device is really worth it or not.

That’s why it’s important to evaluate the two options in a few different categories.

Accuracy

While Google Map Navigation is often seen as still in Beta, it still has a pretty strong degree of accuracy due to the nature of Google.

In fact, many other organizations such as Apple have used the Google Maps network in the past. The Google Maps app makes use of the constant street view cars to get constant up to date information.

Basically, they have a lot more resources than many other companies for this sort of thing.

Efficiency

There are a lot of arguments about which type of GPS is more efficient, but it really comes down to what you’re using it for and which GPS system you are using in particular.

For example, there are some systems you can get installed directly in your car. Since these would run right off the battery, it’d be hard to get much more efficient than that.

Usefulness

The only places were Google Maps and a 4G network tend to lag behind standalone GPS solutions are when you get into some of the phone’s weaknesses.

For example, many phones these days don’t have the option to switch batteries, whereas many standalone GPS devices do have that ability.

Additionally, it’s often difficult to use an Android phone with gloves, and the glare on the special glass can make the GPS hard to use during the day.

As a result, a GPS standalone can often be better in the following situations.

  • Hiking

  • Long Distance Camping

  • Any Extended Outside Us

Cost

If you already have a GPS, or an Android Phone and can’t really afford anything else, then this will be less of an issue.

The main issue tends to be if you already have an Android phone, as most of us do, does it really make sense to buy a separate device?

The fact that Google Maps and Navigation is essentially free to Android subscribers should certainly factor into your decision. Obviously you can argue that it’s not actually free because you still pay for the service in general, but considering everything else that the phone does, the Google Maps certainly comes across as free.

So Should You Buy a Standalone?

In most cases, it just doesn’t make sense to have both a smartphone and a GPS standalone since your phone has GPS already.

And since Google Maps now has the ability to download maps offline, that advantage tends to be removed as well. Paying for both the GPS service and the Android service is prohibitively expensive and often wasteful, unless you have specific needs.

But if you don’t need a smartphone, having just a standalone could be useful. But on the other hand, if you do need to go away from any electric outlet for long periods of time and your phone isn’t good at taking extra batteries, a GPS standalone solution to cover that could make a lot of sense.

The end of May sees the launch of the first of Acer’s summer offerings in the UK, the Iconia A1-810 with 8GB/wifi. It will be retailing at £149.99.

Mid June sees the Iconia B1-710 on the shelves with 8G/wifi and a bargain price of £109.99.

Two more tablets hit the market at the end of July, the Iconia A1-811 3G at £209.99 and the Iconia B1-711 at £129.99.

Acer Iconia Specs

The 7.9in A1 is designed for people on the go with an elegant slim design for one-handed use. It can be slipped into a bag or pocket. It will have a quad-core processor for better all-round multi-media performance and stunning visuals with a LED-backlit display.

A 5mp camera will be ideal to capture pictures and video while out and about and the battery is designed to go a full seven hours without recharging.

Unlike some devices where you need to be right in front of the screen for the best view, the Acer Iconia has 170-degree viewing, with a 1024×768 resolution for the clearest text and graphics. Gamers will love the 4:3 aspect ratio which is also a boon for browsing the internet and e-reading.

There’s no hanging about waiting for the Iconia to boot-up either. The Touch WakeApp gesture gives you a one-touch access to apps as soon as it wakes and you also get all the best of Google like Google Now, Gmail, YouTube, Google Search and more than 700,000 apps from the Google Play Store.

Weighing in at a lightweight 410g, users will be able to connect to wifi with 802.11b/g/n wireless technology or 3G mobile data. The integrated Bluetooth 4.0 allows you to connect to printers, headsets or other devices.

If you’re someone who likes to fire off quick bursts of video then you’ll love the 5mp rear-facing camera which captures 1080p video at 30fps. The Iconia has a quality microphone paired with the front-facing camera and you can share your masterpieces with the micro USB port along with music and other digital content.

Depending on your needs you can get a 8GB or 16GB version to add 32GB via micro SD to the Iconia A1-810.

Samsung look to have another winner on their hands with the launch of the Galaxy Tab 3.

Building on the success of previous releases, the Galaxy Tab 3 is a 7in tablet running on Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.

Samsung have found that users like a sleek design which is comfortable to use on the go and can easily be dropped into a bag or pocket. The Tab 3 is slimmer than the Tab 2 and weighs in at just 302g for the wi-fi version and 306g for the 3G device..

So what do you get in the Galaxy Tab 3 box?

As expected, there’s a 3mp rear camera and 1.3mp front camera so that you can share your best snaps and video footage with friends, and you’re sure to want to do that because the pictures will be stunning in clarity and colour.

The Tab 3 runs on a 1.2GHz Dual Core processor so downloads are fast and you’ll be able to store plenty of data on the 8/16GB of internal storage, as well as the 64GB of expandable memory.

So if you’ve struggled to get all your multimedia onto one device, the Tab 3 will more than meet your demands with its capacity to store music, apps, video and pictures.

Get your order in now because the Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 is going to be smokin’ hot with its 7in WSVGA (1024 x 600, 169ppi) TFT display.

You’ll be able to play full HD video back 1080p at 30 frames a second with sparkling audio.

As you’d expect, all the top Samsung developments of the last couple of releases are on the Tab 3, including the music, games, video and learning hubs, Kies, Kies Air, ChatON the mobile communication service and Google Mobile Services like Gmail, YouTube, Google Play Store, Google Plus, Google Talk, Google Maps with navigation and Google Now.

For connectivity there’s wi-fi and Bluetooth 3, USB 2 and it all runs on a standard Li-ion 4,000mAH battery.

The Samsung Galaxy Tab 3 wi-fi version will be rolled out globally from the beginning of May and the 3G version will be available in June.

Excitement is building as we head towards the Galaxy S4 launch day. We are geeks after all and any new handset is an opportunity to take a look at the big features we can’t wait to get our hands on.

Brilliant S4 hardware

Yes of course, there’s a faster processor, more ram (2 gig) and a bigger 5 inch screen running at 1080p, but that’s just for starters.

There are some other big extras which make the Samsung Galaxy S4 the must-have phone.

Infrared Blaster port

What’s really exciting is the inclusion of an Infrared Blaster port that will allow you to control any device with an infrared receiver, like a TV, blu-ray player or another S4.

It turns your Galaxy S4 into a central control device for a range of products, no matter if it’s NFC, Bluetooth, wifi or now infrared. To my mind that’s exciting stuff.

One device to control them all, no more fumbling around to locate the remote in the dark.

The Camera

Another area we are looking forward to with the hardware is the camera that has been given a worthy bump to 13mpx, promising much better low light performance than the Galaxy S3.

Weight Reduction

The weight reduction should be welcome to some although we are a little concerned it will be too light, could be a good idea to invest in a Galaxy S4 case to help add some bulk and protect it just in case of a drop or knock.

Glove touch

At last, is all I can say! No more cold fingers on winter days. The Galaxy S4 will allow you to interact with gloves on. A simple feature but one that is going to be of huge use to most S4 owners.

We love these Galaxy S4 software features

Dual Camera

The ability to add the front and rear cameras to record simultaneously and overlay one on the other in the final render is brilliant and you have to wonder why no one thought of that earlier. You can also do it with pictures allowing the photographer to be included in the picture.

S Translator

This is possibly the best idea ever and while others have had a go at it, Samsung’s implementation in the Galaxy S4 appears to be very well executed. We can’t wait to try out on-the-fly translations… if we can find someone who speaks a language other than English anyway. Still, for anyone who holidays or travels abroad a lot for work, this app could save some embarrassment if you think you’re asking where the toilet is but instead find you’ve accidentally insulted your host!

Story Album

Taking lots of picture is great, organising all those pictures later not so much fun. Story Albums takes the hard work out of it by intelligently grouping images as they are taken, based on your location and other information.

Group Play

Do you have friends who own Samsung Galaxy smartphones? Well, now you can get eight devices together and all play the same track, creating a surround sound system to rival a nightclub. Now what song to play first, Hey Macarena!

Air Gesture

Incredibly, you don’t even have to touch the Galaxy S4 to interact with it. Air Gesture will allow you to complete basic operations or peek at files just by hovering your finger over the screen. This is a by-product of the Gloved interaction but a welcome and time saving addition.

S Health App

Get fit and let your Galaxy S4 help you by tracking your progress and providing updates in real time. Combined with the S Health band I can see I will be shedding a few pounds and putting my S4 to more productive use than sitting on the couch playing Real Racing 3.

What are you looking forward to with the Galaxy S4? Let us know in the comments.
