Samsung are filling a gap in the market with the versatile Galaxy Mega, a multi-tasking device weighing in at just 199g with all the benefits of a smartphone and the impressive power of a tablet.

Running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean, and launched in the UK in mid-May, the slimline Mega 6.3 will have a 6.3in HD TFT LCD screen but be small enough to hold in one hand. It will have a range of tablet-style features including a split screen for viewing video and other apps.

The screen will have landscape mode support designed for widescreen viewing of video and web browsing as well as some of the new features of the soon-to-arrive Samsung Galaxy 4.

One of the most popular applications is likely to be the 8 megapixel rear-facing camera with a 1.9 megapixel front facing camera. You’ll be able to merge shots of a moving object and capture nine seconds of sound with a picture.

You can tweak any pictures you take as it comes ready loaded with lots of gizmos like Beauty Face, Sports, Best Face and Drama.

The Galaxy Mega will include:

  • S Travel: Never get lost or bored on another journey, you’ll have trip info and local guides at your fingertips
  • Story Album: So you can create a timeline of special events with geo-tags and also print out your digital albums
  • Samsung WatchON: So that you can use the device as a TV and home entertainment remote controller. You’ll also get programme schedules and recommendations
  • Group Play: To share content with up to eight friends using the same wifi network
  • Samsung Link: For easy streaming of photos, videos and music to your TV, tablet or computer
  • ChatON: To link-up with your friends by sharing what’s on your screen

Under the bonnet, the Galaxy Mega has a dual core processor and up to 64GB of expandable memory plus 1.5GB RAM. One of the aims has been to improve the life of the 3200mAh battery.
